VAC-Banned Friends on Steam: What the Number Means

How to interpret VAC-banned friend counts, ratios, incomplete checks, and small samples without treating association as proof.

What CC Stats is counting

When a Steam friend list is public and the required ban checks complete, CC Stats can show how many checked friends currently expose a VAC-ban result. A display such as 4 of 52 means four checked accounts were reported with a VAC ban among 52 friends in the completed result. It does not mean four friends were banned in CS2 specifically, recently, or while playing with the profile owner.

A VAC ban belongs to the banned account

Valve describes VAC as an automated system for detecting cheats used on VAC-secured servers. The public ban state applies to the account receiving it. A friendship link does not transfer that ban and does not prove that the profile owner cheated, queued with the banned account, or even knows the person outside Steam.

The denominator is essential

A raw count without the number of checked friends is easy to misread. Two VAC-banned friends among ten is a different social-network observation from two among five hundred. CC Stats therefore uses the verified count and total together when coverage supports it. Even then, the ratio is a contextual signal rather than a conclusion about the account owner.

Incomplete does not mean zero

Steam can return a private list, a rate limit, a timeout, or a partial ban-check result. CC Stats keeps those states distinct. If the friend list loads but only some ban checks finish, unchecked accounts remain unknown. The interface must not present an interrupted request as zero VAC-banned friends.

A verified public list containing no friends is also different from an unavailable list. The former is a real but limited observation; the latter provides no numeric evidence.

Why small samples are bounded

Ratios become unstable when the denominator is small. One result among two friends produces 50%, but that percentage does not carry the same reliability as a large, complete sample. The CC Stats trust model limits the influence of small friend samples and prevents this social signal from acting like several independent accusations.

VAC bans, game bans, and platform bans differ

Steam exposes VAC bans and game bans as separate account states. Third-party platforms can also maintain their own restrictions. They originate from different systems and should remain separate in a profile report. A missing FACEIT profile is not a ban, and a provider outage is not a clean record.

How to use the number responsibly

  • Check whether both the banned count and total friend count are known.
  • Confirm the result is complete rather than partial or unavailable.
  • Consider the sample size before focusing on the percentage.
  • Do not infer when the friendship was created or whether the players queued together.
  • Review direct account bans and gameplay evidence separately.
